Consultations and Sensory Diets
School Consultations
Sensory Kids can provide a consultation to the entire team working with a child at school (i.e., teacher, aide, special education advisor, therapists, etc.).
The focus of the school consultation is on developing therapeutic strategies and sensory diets, in tandem with the team, to establish a treatment program that minimizes the disruption of the child’s existing classroom schedule to maximize learning and compliance by both the child and the team.
Each consultation is custom tailored for each child’s specific needs, the particular classroom situation, and the child’s team (i.e., sometimes activities involving the entire classroom are more appropriate than one-on-one attention).
School consultations can also be provided to educate school staff in general about how sensory-integration dysfunction can present in the classroom, how to identify it, and strategies that are helpful for these children as well as the entire class.
Sensory Diets
Individualized home-treatment plans include the most up-to-date sensory-integration techniques and sensory “diets.” Sensory diets consist of sensorimotor therapeutic activities and schedules to be followed throughout the day. Sensory diets help children “self-regulate.” The overall goal of these home programs is to provide parents with skills necessary to practice at home the therapeutic techniques offered at the clinic. This ongoing support is crucial: Home programming enhances multi-sensory processing and facilitates learning at an ideal level throughout the day.
Parent Trainings
Home Gym Design
This service allows parents to create a challenging and fun multi-sensory experience in the comfort of the child’s own home. A well-designed home gym can provide significant benefits to the child by allowing more elaborate home sensory supports/diets while substantially increasing the follow-through of the in-clinic services.
The home gym design service entails an analysis of the child’s sensory needs, suggestions of the most useful and appropriate equipment plus a detailed physical design that will maximize the use of the designated space.
Goal Assessment Meeting
The goal assessment meeting with a child’s treating therapist consists of a one-hour discussion with parents. The purpose is to establish certain near-term goals (within 3-6 months of treatment) that the family has decided are important. The therapist will prepare a meeting summary as well as measurable goals that are determined together between therapist and parents. Follow-up goal assessment meetings are scheduled as needed.
