Comprehensive Occupational
& Auditory Evaluations
Sensory Kids offers a number of different occupational and auditory therapy evaluation services to help determine the most appropriate treatment strategy for your child. Through initial conversations and detailed intake forms, we will determine, together, which type of evaluation(s) your child may require.
Comprehensive OT Evaluation:
This is the most thorough and commonly suggested evaluation we provide before beginning occupational therapy services. This evaluation focuses on providing a differential diagnosis of sensory integration dysfunction based on the most recent research being utilized today (i.e., we identify which type[s] of sensory integrative dysfunction your child may display).
The comprehensive OT evaluation combines clinical observations, standardized assessments, checklists forms and parent report. Total therapist time for this evaluation is approximately 9-10 hours broken down as follows:
-
1-2 hour parent interview
-
2-3 hours direct assessment
-
3-4 hours detailed written report and scoring of assessments
- 1-2 hours evaluation feedback meeting and initial goal assessment planning
We choose direct assessment tools utilized based on your child’s age, abilities and needs.
Occuaptional Therapy Screening:
This evaluation is for a child who has either received sensory integrative occupational therapy services in the past or has received a comprehensive occupational therapy evaluation in the last year. This occupational therapy screening evaluation allows the treating therapist to assess your child’s current status and determine relevant treatment needs and goals.
The assessment time for the evaluation lasts one hour, followed by a 30-minute discussion and feedback checklist. Additional evaluations may be recommended at this time.
Auditory and Language Evaluations:
These evaluations, administered by a speech/language therapist, thoroughly examine the child’s auditory and/or language skills and are used to determine which auditory program, if any, will be most beneficial for your child. In addition, gains from the auditory program are clearly demonstrated through post-testing.
This evaluation will:
- assess a child’s ability to comprehend auditory information;
- help to identify children who are at risk for, or who may be experiencing, auditory processing difficulties;
- determine a child’s specific strengths and weaknesses among a number of auditory processing skills;
- provide information regarding a child’s auditory functioning necessary for communication in academic and social situations; and document the child’s improvement in auditory-processing skill abilities as demonstrated through post-testing.
The evaluation combines clinical observations, standardized assessments, checklist forms and parent report. Total therapist time for this evaluation is approximately 5-7 hours broken down as follows:
- 1 hour parent interview/case-history review
- 1-2 hours direct assessment
- 1-2 hours detailed written report and scoring of assessments
- 1 hour evaluation feedback meeting
Direct assessment tools utilized will be based on your child’s age, abilities and needs. Determination of whether your child receives the auditory or language evaluation will be decided together, based on history forms and conversations between you and the evaluating therapist.
Combined Comprehensive Occupational/Auditory Evalution:
This evaluation is the specialty of the Sensory Kids Center. It combines the comprehensive occupational-therapy evaluation with a thorough auditory/language evaluation and oral-motor assessment. In particular, it includes a more in-depth speech-and-language evaluation focusing on all aspects of communication, including auditory processing, expressive and receptive communication, and speech and oral motor skills.
The combined comprehensive occupational/auditory evaluation takes place at the center during a full morning. Your child will start with the language component, have a snack break, and then complete the occupational-therapy portion.
Following presentation of a written report, you will meet with both the occupational therapist and speech-language pathologist for a feedback meeting to determine the best course of action for your child. Because the center specializes in both sensory-integrative therapy and auditory programs, it is a significant benefit to have both the occupational therapist and speech-language pathologist present in the feedback meeting.
